If our lives were some kind of series of improv theater acts, which they seem to be sometimes, and the people that enter and exit our lives were characters, then who are the directors? Ourselves? God? Both?! I often wonder...
There are three new characters that have entered the scene of my life and I would like to share them with you, my audience, my friends, my loved ones. I saved the best for first because I couldn't wait till last - enjoy!
Aaron is a 1/2 Irish & 1/2 Jewish Londoner - short and thin with sharp features and red hair. His father was a North Carolinian Quaker-Puritan turned Jew after meeting an Orthodox-Jewish woman - together they united in a holy union producing the man of which I speak.
His additional background includes Middle-Eastern studies at Manchester U. where he also spent time learning the Hebrew and Arabic languages. After college, he left for the Middle East: Yemen, Egypt, and Israel for two years before heading East to China where he has been living for the last five years in Yunnan and Zhejiang, the province of our current residence.
He speaks with the voice and gestures of a dramatic Shakespearean actor, he stares at my wifes tits, gives sermons at friendly casual, but professional dinners, and he thinks Mahomet and the religion he spawned is completely without merit. He acts deep - thoughtful looks with accompanying drawn-out pauses especially when making long-winded responses to simple questions. What he best conveys is shallowness, complete absurdity, and utter rudeness directed at us and at other members of humanity not of his own ilk. A truly magnificent specimen!
Oh, how lucky Shaoxing University and its students are - next academic year he will be teaching Western Culture! Oh God, thank you for sending him to me, a cad and a character, answering my prayers, and making my life so humorous! If it wasn't for the fact that I can laugh so hard at this blow-hard, I think perhaps, just maybe, I would cry.
